Project Description

Orientation system for the Arp Museum in the Rolandseck railway station in Remagen. The museum was extended by
a new building designed by New York architect Richard Meier and re-opened in September 2007.

More on the opening

Tasks

  • Facilitating best possible orientation
and informing without being too eye-catching
  • Picking up the museum's and the architecture's identity (classicist railway station and modern new building)
  • Use of two languages (German, English)
  • Cost-oriented regarding design and production

Concept & Implementation

In order to reconcile the two predominant architectural styles in an overall orientation system, we chose a typographic solution with the fonts Corporate A and S, meeting the following requirements:

  • Good legibility in all sizes
  • Sufficiently distinguishable font styles
  • Aesthetic appearance also in very large font styles
  • Combinations of font styles underlining different architectural styles

Especially »lekker«

Biographies, texts by artists and a 17-metre-long poem applied to the walls complement the orientation system
so far.

Technology

Application directly on the wall via plotted transparency letters – the memorable architecture and the materials of the respective walls thus remain largely untouched. Furthermore, thanks to the reduction of the orientation elements the visitors are not distracted from the artwork.
